ABSTRACT
This paper reports on a study conducted at the Ateneo de Davao University Junior High School Unit regarding The Nature of Utilization, Perceived Benefits, and Challenges of Internet Use to Junior High School Students’ Academic Performance. This study was conducted to identify how the students utilize the internet, how the students see the internet as a beneficial tool, and what challenges they encounter as they use the internet. Specifically, the study wanted to find out the number of students and teachers with internet access at home, the activities performed by the students and teachers whenever they are online, the students’ perceptions on the internet as a beneficial tool for academic purposes, the challenges experienced by the students whenever they are online, a significant correlation between the availability of internet access and student academic performance, a significant correlation between the nature of students’ internet utilization and their academic performance.
The study employed the descriptive survey method using the online survey questionnaire as the primary tool in collecting data from the Junior High School Students and Teachers of the Ateneo de Davao Junior High School. Frequency and Percentages were the two basic statistical tools used in the treatment of the quantitative data, codes & categories were developed to make sense of the qualitative data..
Findings reveal that majority of the students and teachers have internet access at home. Students who have relatively good grades also have high frequency of non-academic online academic activities. Most students find internet as a beneficial tool for academic purposes. Most students encounter challenges whenever they are online. The trends found on this paper may need further studies for other action researches..
